New residents that recently moved to Volusia County or the Port Orange area may not realize that their children are entitled to free voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK). The VPK program is essentially a preschool program that is offered to every four year old in the state, free of charge.

Children who attend VPK will learn skills that will help prepare them for entering and succeeding in one of the Volusia County elementary schools. 4 year olds experience the classroom atmosphere, learn letters, numbers, cutting, pasting, and more. Children also learn important social interaction with teachers and children their age. It’s a wonderful summer program for those parents who have children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall.

The Port Orange YMCA basketball summer league is open to children ages 3-12, and the cost is $45 for members (there is a slightly higher charge for non-YMCA members). Think of this as another opportunity to keep your children busy during the summer and away from the video games.

The YMCA basketball league focuses on teaching kids the basic basketball skills and how to work together as a team. Games

Seriously though, when all that stuff gets put out at the curb it usually goes to the local landfill. In this economy, a local family may need what you are throwing away. Consider other options before the Volusia County landfill.
