VPK Registration Port Orange 2012

New residents that recently moved to Volusia County or the Port Orange area may not realize that their children are entitled to free voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK). The VPK program is essentially a preschool program that is offered to every four year old in the state, free of charge.

Children who attend VPK will learn skills that will help prepare them for entering and succeeding in one of the Volusia County elementary schools. 4 year olds experience the classroom atmosphere, learn letters, numbers, cutting, pasting, and more. Children also learn important social interaction with teachers and children their age. It’s a wonderful summer program for those parents who have children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall.

To learn more about the VPK program in Volusia County or to get your child signed up, contact the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia, which is located in Daytona Beach. Please call 386-323-2400.

Golf Courses, Tournaments & More In Daytona Beach 2012

Golf courses are a big attraction for buyers relocating to the Daytona Beach area. Daytona Beach and surrounding areas offer golfing opportunities all year long that are very hard to beat. The prices and the courses are very competitive! You can hit the green early in the morning to beat the heat, or spend your evening chipping away. Based on your budget or skill level, there are many courses to choose from.

There is an upcoming golf tournament that any local golfer should add to his/her schedule. It is The Mayor’s Invitational, which takes place in Port Orange on June 16, 2012 at The Golf Club at Cypress Head. To get involved in this event, call 386-506-5851 for more information. If you are just getting started and need some instruction or want to make some improvements, consider checking out one of the Saturday morning golf clinics held at the Daytona Beach Golf Club. Every Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., PGA pros teach the classes, and it’s only $10 per golfer. For more information about these golf lessons, call 386-671-3508.

Here’s a tip for those who are just starting the game of golf and don’t want to spend a lot of money. Search Port Orange golf course communities or Daytona Beach neighborhoods for garage sales to find great deals on golf club sets. Finding a used set of clubs is enough to get started in the game of golf without investing hundreds of dollars on a new set of clubs.

Treating And Avoiding Jellyfish Stings

Summer weather is finally here again and it's time to enjoy the Daytona area beaches. This time of year you may see different warning flags at the beach. One warning you may find on the beach this time of year is the jellyfish or man o' war warning. Steady east or northeast winds may push this marine wildlife to shallow waters. It's always a good idea to consult a lifeguard about colored flags positioned at Daytona Beach lifeguard stands.

The only way you can completely avoid jellyfish stings is to stay away from the beach. That's hard to do when the weather is perfect! We live here in the Daytona Beach area for the beach, so that’s not an option for many of us. Awareness of the jellyfish or man o' war presence is key to avoiding a sting or any complications. The good news is that jellyfish and man o' war presence here is rare, but it's always a good idea to be prepared just in case.

First, when you drive onto the beach notice the flag color. If it’s purple, it means there is dangerous marine life. You should inquire with the beach patrol or a lifeguard to find out what the dangerous marine life is that you should avoid. If it’s Portuguese Man o’ War, like it was this past weekend, you need to be very careful when in the water. Man O' War presence in the water may be the day you spend building sandcastles instead of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.

If you do get stung, avoid rubbing and avoid pouring water on the sting. For quick relief, pour straight vinegar over the entire sting. Pouring vinegar on the sting will take away the pain. Small portions of the population can have a dangerous reaction that requires immediate medical attention. It's a good idea to keep a bottle of vinegar in your beach bag just in case.

Daytona Cubs 2012 Opening Day

Are you ready for some baseball in the Florida sun? Game on! The opening day of the Daytona Cubs is April 6, 2012. First game of the 2012 season is on the road and opening night at Jackie Robinson Stadium is April 6. Now is the time to grab your hat and glove and head to the stadium for some good old fashioned American fun.

Whether you have kids, just want to get the guys together, or want to make it a family fun night, going to a Daytona Cubs game can be a fun baseball fan experience. If you want to take your family, it won’t break the bank. Jackie Robinson is a nice stadium, in a great location, with many dining options located just across the street from the stadium. Prior to the game enjoy a nice dinner on Beach Street at one of the many restaurants. Just park at the stadium, walk across to grab a bite to eat, and go back to the stadium for the game. You could always eat at the stadium and enjoy one of many food and drink specials offered daily.

If you do have kids, be sure to check out the Cubby’s Crew information. They can join the club and receive free admission to home games on Friday nights. You can find more information on joining Cubby’s Crew, and more information on the Daytona Cubs season schedule.
