VPK Registration Port Orange 2012

New residents that recently moved to Volusia County or the Port Orange area may not realize that their children are entitled to free voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK). The VPK program is essentially a preschool program that is offered to every four year old in the state, free of charge.

Children who attend VPK will learn skills that will help prepare them for entering and succeeding in one of the Volusia County elementary schools. 4 year olds experience the classroom atmosphere, learn letters, numbers, cutting, pasting, and more. Children also learn important social interaction with teachers and children their age. It’s a wonderful summer program for those parents who have children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall.

To learn more about the VPK program in Volusia County or to get your child signed up, contact the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia, which is located in Daytona Beach. Please call 386-323-2400.

Port Orange YMCA Basketball Summer League 2012

Looking for affordable activities for your child to do this summer? How about signing up for a Port Orange summer basketball league? The Port Orange YMCA is now holding their summer basketball registration. It’s an affordable way for kids to be active this summer and make new friends. Friendly competition indoors and an opportunity to develop team work.

The Port Orange YMCA basketball summer league is open to children ages 3-12, and the cost is $45 for members (there is a slightly higher charge for non-YMCA members). Think of this as another opportunity to keep your children busy during the summer and away from the video games.

The YMCA basketball league focuses on teaching kids the basic basketball skills and how to work together as a team. Games are typically held at the Port Orange YMCA, located at City Center. Occasionally there are games that may require traveling to another local YMCA. The fee to play includes their uniform shirt, and each child gets a trophy at the end of the season.

For more information or to sign your child up for youth summer basketball, call the Port Orange YMCA at 386-760-9622, or stop in and speak to someone at the main desk.

Golf Courses, Tournaments & More In Daytona Beach 2012

Golf courses are a big attraction for buyers relocating to the Daytona Beach area. Daytona Beach and surrounding areas offer golfing opportunities all year long that are very hard to beat. The prices and the courses are very competitive! You can hit the green early in the morning to beat the heat, or spend your evening chipping away. Based on your budget or skill level, there are many courses to choose from.

There is an upcoming golf tournament that any local golfer should add to his/her schedule. It is The Mayor’s Invitational, which takes place in Port Orange on June 16, 2012 at The Golf Club at Cypress Head. To get involved in this event, call 386-506-5851 for more information. If you are just getting started and need some instruction or want to make some improvements, consider checking out one of the Saturday morning golf clinics held at the Daytona Beach Golf Club. Every Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., PGA pros teach the classes, and it’s only $10 per golfer. For more information about these golf lessons, call 386-671-3508.

Here’s a tip for those who are just starting the game of golf and don’t want to spend a lot of money. Search Port Orange golf course communities or Daytona Beach neighborhoods for garage sales to find great deals on golf club sets. Finding a used set of clubs is enough to get started in the game of golf without investing hundreds of dollars on a new set of clubs.

How To Get Rid Of Things During A Move

Drive through any neighborhood in Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach, or Daytona Beach, and you will find a lot of people throwing away a lot of furniture and stuff. Drive through on garbage day in a neighborhood like Waters Edge or Sanctuary, and you may just find enough at the curb to furnish a small apartment! Seriously though, when all that stuff gets put out at the curb it usually goes to the local landfill. In this economy, a local family may need what you are throwing away. Consider other options before the Volusia County landfill.

EVery little bit of trash matters. Here are a few options to relieve the local landfill of items that may have use in a second home.

Pack it up and drop it off at an area thrift store. They are always happy to take donations.

Take a picture of it and run an ad on Craigslist giving it away.

Set it in your driveway with a “free” sign on it.

Call Amvets, a charity, who will come pick the stuff up from your house.

Save it up and have a garage sale, or set up a table in a friend or family garage sale.

Remember, A local family or resident may need items from your home that you are considering throwing in the garbage.

Treating And Avoiding Jellyfish Stings

Summer weather is finally here again and it's time to enjoy the Daytona area beaches. This time of year you may see different warning flags at the beach. One warning you may find on the beach this time of year is the jellyfish or man o' war warning. Steady east or northeast winds may push this marine wildlife to shallow waters. It's always a good idea to consult a lifeguard about colored flags positioned at Daytona Beach lifeguard stands.

The only way you can completely avoid jellyfish stings is to stay away from the beach. That's hard to do when the weather is perfect! We live here in the Daytona Beach area for the beach, so that’s not an option for many of us. Awareness of the jellyfish or man o' war presence is key to avoiding a sting or any complications. The good news is that jellyfish and man o' war presence here is rare, but it's always a good idea to be prepared just in case.

First, when you drive onto the beach notice the flag color. If it’s purple, it means there is dangerous marine life. You should inquire with the beach patrol or a lifeguard to find out what the dangerous marine life is that you should avoid. If it’s Portuguese Man o’ War, like it was this past weekend, you need to be very careful when in the water. Man O' War presence in the water may be the day you spend building sandcastles instead of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.

If you do get stung, avoid rubbing and avoid pouring water on the sting. For quick relief, pour straight vinegar over the entire sting. Pouring vinegar on the sting will take away the pain. Small portions of the population can have a dangerous reaction that requires immediate medical attention. It's a good idea to keep a bottle of vinegar in your beach bag just in case.
