Daytona Beach Fishing Piers
A couple of months ago I discussed the various charter fishing opportunities that our Central Florida community has to offer, but these trips can be pricey and their time constraints may not always be accommodating to your busy schedule. If you’re interested in a less expensive and a more on-your-own-time fishing experience, there are several great options for pier-fishing in our area. There are some options that have the opportunity to rent equipment (and will require a daily fishing fee) while other areas are open to the public but will require your own bait and tackle. In many cases a fishing license is required for both fresh and salt-water fishing in Florida, though many of the bigger piers in our area already have the licensing included in the admission. Paid Fishing Areas:
Sunglow Pier- Located just South of the Dunlawton Bridge on A1A in Port Orange, Sunglow Pier offers a great fishing area as well a local seafood favorite, Crabby Joe’s. The cost to fish is $7.00 per day for adults and $3.00 for children under 12. There are also further discounts for 10-day, 3 month, 6 month and annual passes. Here you can bring your own bait and tackle or rent a rod for only $2.00 as well as select from various frozen baits for purchase. Some popular types of fish caught from this pier include: whiting, kings, blues, flounder, sheep’s head and even the occasional shark. The pier offers well lit areas as well as seating for your relaxing fishing day. Come out and enjoy this local favorite that has brought in tourists and fishermen alike for over 50 years.
"Free" Fishing Areas:
Daytona Beach Pier/ Main Street Pier:
Located at 1200 Main Street in Daytona Beach, this newly reopened attraction also has a wonderful expanse of pier for a leisurely afternoon of fishing. As mentioned a few weeks ago, the pier recently was revamped by seafood chain Joe’s Crab Shack and has once again become a beautiful and popular area hotspot. The best part is, the pier fishing here is completely free of charge. However, there is no equipment or bait available for sale, so remember to bring everything you need. Also, you cannot clean or cut your catch while on the pier itself. Even if you miss the big one (which I know you won’t), this location offers great views of the Daytona Beach coastline and is walking distance to many unique restaurants and attractions.
Dunlawton Bridge:
Fishing the intracoastal waterway can be as relaxing and rewarding as being out off those larger piers. Escape the sun beneath the Dunlawton Bridge (or one of our other area bridges along the Halifax River) and go after fish such as flounder, mangrove snapper and redfish. There is plenty of parking in this area as well as a few great local seafood restaurants if your catch doesn’t feed the family.
Ponce Inlet/ Jetty: 
The majestic Ponce Inlet jetty, lighthouse and surrounding areas are a great place to fish as well as relax and enjoy the beauty all around. Stroll down the walkway of the jetty and fish with the many locals that frequent this area. Your own tackle and bait will be required, and do your best to be careful reeling in around the sharp, jagged rocks. Your lines and bait can, and probably will, get caught. While fishing you can also witness some of the best surfing in all of Florida and also enjoy the boats leaving and entering jetty.
Spruce Creek Park:
6250 Ridgewood Ave., Port Orange -This park along with many other Volusia County Parks offer fishing docks, cookout areas and even playgrounds for the children. Spruce Creek Park has a 536-foot boardwalk and nearly 3 miles of hiking trails. Culminate your fishing and walking excursion with a breath-taking view of the Spruce Creek marsh area from a 15-foot observation tower. This list hardly scratches the surface of the great fishing opportunities that our Daytona Beach area has to offer. Try these or explore other options and leave a comment about your experience.
