Downtown Daytona Beach Part 1
The main promenade of Downtown Daytona Beach, Beach Street, is a sometimes forgotten gem of our local culture offering everything from museums to baseball games, nightclubs and one-of-a-kind dining, to an award-winning chocolate shop, and much more. There is truly something for everyone in this historic district of Daytona Beach and the best part is that all of your new discoveries are within walking distance of each other. Below I will outline some of the great attractions nestled in this area so you can plan your next adventure with friends or family.
Farmers Market - Come visit Florida’s oldest farmers market each Saturday from 8am to noon and enjoy some of the finest local produce available and much more. Along with the usual fresh, local fruits and vegetables, you can also find organic options, baked goods, garden plants, handmade jewelry, local seafood, and handmade soaps and candles. With this assortment of items and many more, the Downtown Daytona Farmers Market offers something for everyone and can be a fun adventurous outing for you and your family. The market is located on City Island next to Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Jackie Robinson Ballpark: Home of the Daytona Cubs - The season may be winding down but there is still time to catch the local flare of America’s pastime. Come watch our local minor league baseball team in the next couple weeks as they cap off another great season. Come out on a Saturday for a wonderful firework display after the game. Prices are affordable and there are many promotional offers and specialty nights that are sure to make this outing fun for the whole family. For more information visit Daytona Cubs.
Angell & Phelps - For over 85 years Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory has been serving the Daytona Beach area a selection of the best candies available, but even more, a tutorial in the American spirit. In 1925, two industrious women, Riddell Angell and Cora Phelps began making their homemade chocolate candies in Michigan. With the start of WWII, they were forced to move their growing business to Daytona Beach, where they met more challenges. They immediately found an issue keeping the chocolates cool enough in the Florida heat in a time before modern air conditioning and refrigeration. But against these odds, Angell and Phelps not only survived the sudden move and climate challenges, but actually drew great success, growing their business on quality products and friendly service.
Today Angell and Phelps still uses many of the original recipes that Riddell and Cora made famous, and moreover, you will still be greeted with a warm smile from the always friendly staff. Using the freshest quality ingredients helps Angell and Phelps offer their “ironclad 100% satisfaction guaranteed” promise. If for any reason you are not satisfied here, they will promptly replace or refund your purchase. This business practice along with an inspiring story in American entrepreneurship is great, but what about the chocolates, you ask? Well, now you’re in for a real treat.
Angell and Phelps offers an array of milk and dark chocolate options from chocolate covered nuts to fruit cremes and much more. They offer molded chocolates for almost any occasion as well as pre-packaged gift boxes for your convenience. There are gourmet jellybeans, fudge, and even delicious sugar-free options available as well. All of their products can be ordered online, but one of best parts about the Angell and Phelps experience is actually taking the tour of the chocolate factory. Tours are run hourly each day from 10am to 4pm and are guided as a friendly employee describes the process that each chocolate treat goes through before leaving the store with you. The tour lasts about 20 minutes and there is a free sample at the end. This is surely a sweet, family fun option for everyone.
Come see why Trip Advisor named Angell and Phelps one of the “Top 10 Sweetest Destinations in America”. Angell and Phelps, located on Beach Street, is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30am to 6pm. For more information or to order online, visit Angell & Phelps.
Cinematique Theater of Daytona - For 20 years the Cinematique Theater of Daytona has been bringing rare foreign and local independent films to the citizens of Daytona Beach. The only theater in the area offering table seating where you can dine and enjoy adult beverages, Cinematique is a unique and exciting alternative from the movie-going norm. The pricing is on par with other local theaters but the ambiance and experience of watching a hard-to-find film in this intimate setting elevates Cinematique to a new level of affordable and elegant entertainment. Open Tuesday through Sunday, Cinematique offers several films at a time, changing on a regular basis. There is also a membership option which offers discounted admission and food prices, and be sure to check out “Wine-down Wednesdays” for great wine specials all day on Wednesdays. For upcoming films and showtimes visit Daytona Beach Cinematique.
