Flag Day At Ponce Inlet Lighthouse
When: Friday, June 14th, 10:00am - 2:00pm
Where: Ponce Inlet Lighthouse 4931 S. Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet.
What: Come explore historical exhibits and climb the tallest lighthouse in Florida. Learn about Semaphore history and how Semaphore flags were used to communicate important messages to boats at sea, and journey back 100 years ago, when the keepers and their families lived at the lighthouse. In 1927, Mosquito Inlet was renamed to honor the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, and the lighthouse that also bears his name was completed in 1887. Visitors to the Lighthouse during the Family Fun Flag Day will have the opportunity to participate in family-oriented activities that have been designed to highlight the rich Spanish heritage in the State of Florida. One of the featured activities for this event will be Ponce on a Stamp: from Idea to the Envelope. Have you ever wondered how a person, place or thing end up featured on a U.S. stamp? Learn about the process of the creation of a stamp. Learn about the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee and create your own commemorative stamp design to mark the 500th year of Ponce de Leon's discovery of the State that we call home.
