You may not know, but just a short drive from Daytona Beach is the unofficial skydive training capital of the world. Skydive Deland, located at the airport in Deland right off of US-92, draws the world’s best sky divers as well as first-timers and just the occasional gawkers.
Those new to sky diving are offered tandem jumps which entail being attached to a trained instructor for your first jump. After an initial briefing, it isn’t long before you will be taking off in one of the Sky Dive Deland airplanes, ascending to nearly 14,000 feet. When you and your instructor make the leap, you will free-fall for a full minute at speeds of 120 mph hour or more, before the instructor opens the dual-sized parachute, and together you’ll fly back to the ground for a soft landing. Tandem jumps start at $179, with cheaper group rates offered. There is also the opportunity to have your jump video recorded so you can share your flight with friends and family.
For those who may have a tandem under their belt, Skydive Deland offers a great instructional program that is designed to teach you to become a skydiver. Accelerated Free Fall is a seven-step program that will gradually get you to the point of getting that instructor off your back (literally) and experience sky diving by yourself. This program includes a 6-hour ground class as well as personalized training where you can complete each step at your own pace.
If you’re not sure you are ready to make the plunge yet, come on down to Skydive Deland and leisurely watch the pros land softly in front of the Drop Zone, a restaurant and bar. Open 365 days a year, weather permitting, Skydive Deland is waiting for you to make the jump. Visit Skydive Deland.
