Spruce Creek High School Ranks Nationally 2008
Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, Florida, made Newsweeks top 100 once again in 2008. This ranking is attributed to the number of Advanced Placement, Cambridge Exams, and International Baccalaureate, exams high schools administer to graduating students. Linda Trimble wrote an article in the Daytona Beach News Journal and it is included below:
PORT ORANGE -- Spruce Creek High School has made Newsweek magazine's list of 100 top high schools in the nation once again. This is the fifth year the Port Orange school has made that list, based on the number of International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement and Cambridge exams schools give compared to their numbers of graduates. Students can earn college credit for courses taken in high school if they score high enough on those exams. Schools are rated on a "Challenge Index" reflecting research showing a strong correlation between the rigor of a student's high school courses to success in college. Spruce Creek ranked 92nd on the list this year, compared to 54th last year. Principal Tim Egnor said that's a result of more competition. "What I think is other schools are getting better; it's not that we're getting worse," he said. "More and more schools are offering more AP and IB exams. We were kind of early into this." The list of 100 top schools appears in the May 26 edition of Newsweek, while a list of the top 1,300 appears on the magazine's Web site www.newsweek.com . Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach also appears on the online list, ranking 1,134th.
